From 12 Prescriptions to Freedom: How MexiCanna RN Reclaimed Her Health with Plant Medicine

Updated: Jul 31

Odilia Hernandez Underwood, MexiCanna RN, guest on The Canna Boss Babes Podcast, episode April 8, 2025, about lupus healing and medical cannabis advocacy.

When Odilia—known online as MexiCanna RN—was first diagnosed with lupus, her life became a cycle of pain, exhaustion, and endless prescriptions. A nurse and veteran, she had the knowledge to understand what was happening to her body, but that didn’t make living with the disease any easier. At one point, she was taking 12 different medications—from antidepressants and migraine treatments to Plaquenil for lupus—and still felt like she was merely surviving.

"I wanted to live. I wanted to be part of my own life again," Odilia shared. Her wake-up call came when her kidneys began showing signs of damage—a point of no return if she didn’t make serious changes. She realized that the conventional approach of stacking prescriptions to treat side effects on top of symptoms wasn’t giving her life back. Something had to change.

Choosing a Different Path

Odilia began to explore alternative healing, combining her medical background with a personal commitment to wellness. Her toolkit grew to include:

  • Cannabis as medicine – a cornerstone of her healing, helping manage pain and inflammation without the debilitating side effects of pharmaceuticals.

  • Mindful nutrition – focusing on food as fuel and expressing gratitude for meals as part of her healing practice.

  • Meditation & spirituality – including practices inspired by Jose Silva and Joe Dispenza, tapping into the power of the mind-body connection to reduce stress and support the immune system.

  • Grounding and nature therapy – walking barefoot, connecting with the earth, and prioritizing time outdoors.

With intention, gratitude, and plant medicine, Odilia slowly weaned herself off medications—eventually reducing her prescriptions from 12 to zero. While lupus doesn’t have a cure, she now experiences more good days than bad and feels in control of her health and her life.

Becoming an Advocate

Odilia’s journey didn’t stop with personal healing. Her experience as both a patient and a nurse pushed her to become a vocal advocate for cannabis patients and compassionate care. Living in Nebraska, where medical cannabis has only recently been approved and is still in the rollout phase, she’s become a bridge between patients and policy.

She now lobbies at the state capitol, working alongside families and advocates to expand access and fight stigma. Her message to lawmakers is clear: cannabis is medicine, and patients deserve the right to choose it.

“Once I embraced cannabis as part of my wellness, I couldn’t understand why it was illegal,” she said. “As a nurse, I see how many lives this plant could save or improve if we allowed safe, legal access.”

Odilia’s advocacy focuses not only on legislation but also on education. She emphasizes the importance of understanding the endocannabinoid system, harm reduction, and the need for lab-tested, regulated products to ensure safety for patients—especially those with autoimmune conditions like hers.

Lessons from the Journey

Odilia’s story is one of resilience, courage, and transformation. From her experience, she offers these insights to others navigating chronic illness and considering plant medicine:

  1. Be intentional about your healing. Healing is a holistic process that includes your body, mind, and environment.

  2. Give yourself grace. Some days are harder than others, and rest is part of recovery.

  3. Be your own advocate. Whether it’s telling a doctor “no” to a new prescription or speaking at the capitol, your voice matters.

  4. Find your supportive community. Surround yourself with people and practices that replenish rather than drain you.

From surviving to thriving, Odilia’s journey is proof that when patients reclaim their power and embrace plant medicine, healing becomes more than a possibility—it becomes a way of life.
