At Hall of Flowers, I met Lauren Fontein, co-founder of The Artist Tree cannabis dispensary and art gallery, a retail concept that combines cannabis, art, and community into a one-of-a-kind shopping experience.
From the start, The Artist Tree was designed to break away from traditional dispensary stereotypes. Instead of dark, intimidating spaces, customers walk into bright, gallery-style stores showcasing local art alongside curated cannabis products.
Why The Artist Tree Cannabis Dispensary Stands Out
Every location features rotating art exhibits from local artists, making each visit unique and hyperlocal. The mission is to create an approachable cannabis shopping experience for both first-time customers and seasoned enthusiasts. Trained staff guide visitors through a wide range of products while fostering an inviting and educational environment.
Lauren’s Journey from Law to Cannabis Retail
Lauren began her cannabis career in 2009 after leaving corporate law. Her start came through creating edibles for a friend’s medical dispensary, well before today’s precise dosing and packaging standards. That hands-on work evolved into retail licensing and, ultimately, the launch of The Artist Tree cannabis dispensary brand.
Expanding Across California and Beyond
The Artist Tree currently operates multiple dispensary locations and cannabis consumption lounges in California, with more on the way:
Fresno (opening soon)
Riverside (licensing pending)
Potential Long Beach location
Exploring East Coast markets, including New York
Each location is tailored to its community by showcasing local artists and hosting diverse events, strengthening the bond between cannabis retail and local culture.
The Artist Tree’s Unique Approach
Blends art gallery ambiance with cannabis retail
Supports and showcases local artists
Creates inclusive spaces for all consumers
Offers curated, high-quality cannabis products
The Artist Tree cannabis dispensary proves that cannabis retail can be elevated, approachable, and culturally connected—making it a model worth watching as legalization spreads.
